Disaster Pornography from Somalia

"Poverty Porn" is considered 'disaster pornography' by journalist Alex de Wall, as these images often contradict what the photographer set out to do. When human beings in disaster situations or poverty stricken circumstances are photographed, they are most likely not asked whether they would like to be represented in such a way. Thus, "poverty porn" creates a disastrous situation in that there is no acknowledgement of the resilience and strength within the community. As de Wall states, ""The truth is that, even in the areas of the country stricken by famine, outright starvation is the exception. Most deaths are the result of disease. The great majority of people will survive-largely due to their own efforts".
